Land Acknowledgement

Vilda operates on the Indigenous Lands of several tribes including Coast Miwok, Pomo and Washo peoples. In an effort to honor the land where we live and learn, as well as the Indigenous Nations who have tended to it for generations, and continue tending to it we acknowledge the history of colonization and the ongoing fight for promised treaty-rights that continue to shape Indigenous-settler relationships in our community and our bioregion.

Our organization aims to lead with a spirit of compassion, deep reflection, and understanding. We begin this effort by honoring and educating about the truth of the history that brings us to where we are today.

It is a privilege for us to be here on the ancestral lands of Coast Miwok, Pomo and Washo and many others perhaps unknown to us. We thank these caretakers of this land who have lived, and continue to live, here since time immemorial.

Supporting Indigenous Nations

Vilda is committed to taking actionable steps to support the Indigenous Nations who live on the lands where our school operates and resides and beyond.

A few programs we support and hope you will too:

Alliance for Felix Cove

The Alliance for Felix Cove advocates for the protection and restoration of the only remaining 19th century Tomalko (Coast Miwok Tomales Bay)-built home at Point Reyes National Seashore.

The Alliance aims to re-indigenize the ancestral homelands of the Felix Family—the last Tomalko family to live on the western shores of Tomales Bay at Felix Cove known as Laird’s Landing.

Museum of the American Indian

Novato, CA

The Museum of the American Indian uplifts, supports, and makes visible the Indigenous Peoples of the Americas by offering authentic educational programs and cultural resources to Marin and the greater Bay Area.

Coast Miwok Tribal Council of Marin

Since time immemorial, as long as the sun has filled our days with the gift of light, and as long as the moon has guided our path at night, Coast Miwok people, who hold the uncontestable aboriginal title, have occupied, tended, stewarded, held sacred ceremonies, defended and governed according to the traditions of our ancestors the unceded lands of present-day Marin County, California.

Marin Indian Alliance

The Marin American Indian Alliance provides a venue for tribal cultural and spiritual gatherings where, using traditional intertribal prayers and drumming, American Indians within Marin County and in the Bay Area can connect with their heritage to maintain self-esteem and cultural pride. The main objective is to provide education, information resources, and a support network system for our Native American Indian Community.

Indigenous Healing Center

The Indigenous Healing Center (IHC) is focusing on supporting Indigenous Medicine practitioners and Indigenous health promoters/community health workers, to offer health and healing services, education, and training, all from an Indigenous worldview.

The IHC seeks to address underlying inequities through a resurgence and reclamation of our Indigenous cultures and lifeways, that we believe is the source of our medicine and healing.
